NeoGuides / Idle Archive: Autumn '08 / Deskstop Tower Defense

Desktop Tower Defense is simple: a Flash-based screen game where you try to stop the enemies ("creeps") from taking over the office desk-top on which the game is set. You do this by creating towers. You buy the towers with game-money you earn from killing the creeps.

In old-school terms it's a bit like Pacman meets Space Invaders, except that it doesn't cost anything to play. It is, devotees attest, inexplicably addictive. Created in March 2007 by first-timer Paul Preece, it became a huge underground success - so much so that Preece quit his job to become a full-time games developer.

For a simple explanation of precisely how it works, and how it can make time disappear, see this blog post.
