Chameleon Glass

13 Kay Street, Franklin, 7113

Want to see magic at work? Richard Clements is a wizard with glass, whirling, forming, joining, cutting, colouring and baking the hot liquid forms over his tiny workbench using just his skill and a super-hot flame. The technique is called lamp-working, and you'll probably know it as the traditional style of Murano.

To meet this master in his cluttered studio high above the tranquil Huon River valley is a treat. To be allowed to watch him while he works is an experience not to be missed. To listen to his stories about the glass, his practice and his life in the Valley is a rare delight.

Call to arrange a visit (you'll need instructions to find it; please note that he can't accommodate small children or large groups). If you can't make it in person, you can still see (and buy) his unique, hand-wrought pieces on his website.
